Hand powered Rope pumps

Most hand powered models consists of a handle, and a pump structure or frame to support the handle in the shape of an A. Another model has a handle which is mounted on poles. Materials used are angle iron, tubes and round bar. "home made" Rope pumps are often made of wood. This page informs about pumps as promoted by training centers (SMART Centers) of SHIPO organisation in Tanzania and the Mzuzu university in Malawi.         The models used there are:
  • SHIPO model 1 (mostly used for small commuities)
  • SHIPO model 2 (economy model for families)
  • SHIPO model 3 ( model mounted on poles)

Advantages of Model 3,  the model mounted on poles
  • Easy installation on existing wells. If a pulley and bucket was used, the same poles can be used to mount the handle.
  • Fits on any size of well.
  • Easy to combine with a low cost well cover (made in 2 parts to allow access to well).
  • Less material, less corrosion, cheaper.
  • Easy to mount a second handle (for deep wells) or make it pedal or motor driven.
  • Easy transport, less volumen.
  • Discharge can be at 1 to 1.5 meter above ground level so useful for irrigation (see Low-cost irrigation).

Disadvantages of Model 3,  the model mounted on poles
  • Less attractive as a compact "off the shelf" product.
  • Poles need to be treated well of they will be eaten by termites.
